Religion and spirituality

These days we see and listen to many religious/spiritual discourses. Are we really gaining any benefit out of these? Is there any noticeable change in the society or in each individual (spiritual context)?. I doubt?! As Swami Vivekananda stated: "You have to grow from inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul".

So far as I know in ancient times, the rishis(sages) never gave discourses as such. It looks like in this modern age the religion and spirituality has become means of earning and big business. Of course we need the translation and availability of scriptures. Again, in this process we may loose the core knowledge. What is the elegibility criterion in giving discourses and commenting on the very auspecious scriptures. To be honest, how many munutes can we keep the mind still at one point? Then how can we grasp the knowledge of those scriptures written by the rishis who could sit and concentrate for days together. I guess due to this incompatibility the discourses may go in different directions and dilutes the values of the scriptures. What do you think? Please shade your thoughts.
